In the States Sony has take the wraps off what it says is the world's lightest notebook - the Vaio X Series.

With a lightweight carbon-fibre chassis, the 11.1-inch X Series weighs in at 1.6 pounds - about 0.72kg - and is just over half an inch thick, although it loses both an optical drive and USB - both functionalities are taken care of with an external option.

The 16:9 display is LED backlit, the touchpad gets multi-touch capabilities, there's GPS and an SSD drive instead of hard disk.

Running Windows 7, power-wise, the standard battery is good for 3.5 hours, while the super-extended capacity battery claims 14.

In the US the X Series will come with 3G from Verizon Wireless, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Available in black and gold, pricing for the X Series starts at about $1300 with retail availability due in November. It will be available in the UK from November as well.
