Sony has proudly unveiled what it says is the world’s lightest 12.1-inch notebook, which weighs less than 900g and according to the press images, can be held with just one hand.

Made of carbon fibre, the Vaio G series consists of six models aimed at a range of consumer and business use. They all feature an Intel processor, in a choice of Celeron or Core Solo, 512MB of memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a shock-resistant hard drive, and a 12.1-inch display. Hard drives are available from 40-80GB.

Although the VGN-G1LAP weighs under 900g, adding a DVD writer and a bigger battery drives up the weight – to a relatively light 1.1kg for the VGN-G1KAP. No wonder the battery is heavy; it’s supposed to last an impressive 12.5hours.

Although pricing and availability in Europe for various models isn’t available yet, they go on sale in Japan only on 2 December; customised models start at ¥164,800 (£740).
