Sony, champion of the Blu-ray disc format, has unveiled its first internal BD rewritable drive.

The new drive burns 50GB BD-R and BD-RE discs, which equates to up to four hours for HD video.

Be prepared to be patient with these next generation disc; a 25GB disc will take about 50 minutes to burn.

The drive is backward compatible with the DVD format, so that it can record on DVD+R/+RW/RAM and also on double and dual later discs and CDs.

When it's mounted on to PCs, it will be bundled with CyberLink BD Solution software to make putting movies captured with an HDV 1080i format camcorder on a disc simple to do.

The drive will be available in August for about $750; is already accepting pre-orders for brave souls ready to take a stand in the Blu-ray/HD DVD stand off.
