Sony took to the floor at its IFA 2013 press conference announcing a bundle of new products, among which was the Sony Vaio Tap 11. Said to be the "world's thinnest Windows 8 tablet PC" at 9.9mm it is not only pretty slim, but we also found it to be lightweight and easy to hold.

It comes with an 11.6-inch Full HD touchscreen for you to browse the web, edit your photos or play with Windows apps. It boasts Sony's X-Reality for mobile on selected models and Triluminos Display tech, which at first glance seems to help provide the crisp, sharp display and vibrant colours.

Packed with the latest Intel Core i5 processor, along with SSD storage, the Vaio Tap 11 responded quickly when we had a little play with it. We weren't hanging around waiting for it to react, and it moved fast when faced with a task, moving swiftly between screens. Of course, we can't fully judge it from the short time we spent with it, but we'll be sure to give it a thorough investigation when we get it in for review.

You'll find an 8-megapixel camera rear-facing camera, with a Exmor RS for PC sensor. We didn't get a chance to assess the photo quality on the show floor. There's also a kickstand on the rear to support the tablet when using it with the accessory keyboard.

When it comes to music, the Sony Tap 11 is NFC-enabled, so connecting to compatible speakers or headphones will simply be a case of tapping them to pair, with Sony offering a wide range of NFC accessories, of course.

You can also partner the Viao Tap 11 with your TV and home entertainment system, acting as an infrared remote, as well as allowing you to browse schedules and get details about the show you're watching through TV SideView, available through the app store - something that Sony has previously done with its Android tablets.

The slim, full-pitch, wireless keyboard with touchpad is light, smart and complements the Vaio Tap 11's design. It can be attached over the screen as a protective cover when not in use. It looks good both as a keyboard and a cover, and in our quick typing test we found the keyboard action to be surprisingly good, perhaps making the Vaio Tap 11 a great option for those who don't want the bulk of a laptop proper, but don't want to sacrifice a decent keyboard.

There is also a digitiser stylus pen that lets you take notes or jot things down. We had a little draw and found it was responsive and quick, just as it is on Sony's Vaio Duo 13.

The Sony Vaio Tap 11 is nicely designed, looking good and responding quickly in our first encounter. The display is sharp and vibrant and we really like the execution of the keyboard doubling as a protective cover.

The Sony Vaio Tap 11 comes in a choice of black or white and will be available in Europe from autumn 2013.
