(Pocket-lint) - Dell has announced an update to its XPS line, with the XPS 15 benefiting not only from the latest Haswell Intel Core processors, but also an UltraSharp high-resolution display.

The Dell XPS 15 stands as an obvious competitor to the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, only going one better with Dell's 15.6-inch display offering a 3200 x 1800 pixel resolution. That's sharper than Apple's model, coming close to the display on the Chromebook Pixel. If you haven't had the chance to see a display as capable as those, you really should, as the results are magnificent.

The same applies here. Although we didn't have time to fully test the XPS 15's new display, our initial impressions are very good. It's touch-enabled too.

The Dell XPS 15 is more than just a display however. It's plenty powerful, with the option for Nvidia graphics, making this notebook a solid choice for anyone powering through a lot of video or image editing, or just if you fancy taking your gaming up a notch.

But the package is impressive too. The slim chassis of the XPS 15 matches that of the XPS 13, with a carbonfibre finish to the base, which is not only lovely to look at, but wonderful to touch too. The keyboard is well spaced and offers a great typing action, with a large trackpad and great tactile finish to the deck.

Finally you have the brushed-aluminium lid, which finishes things off nicely: make no mistake, this is a great looking laptop, dripping in quality. It weighs 2kg.

Adding to the mix is NFC, designed to make it simpler and faster to connect devices and share content, be that a printer, camera or speakers. It's a welcome addition, even if it's just for connecting to your smartphone. Although there's no optical drive in the XPS 15, there's plenty of connectivity around the sides.

At the moment we don't have the pricing or availability for the new Dell XPS 15, but we'll be sure to update when we do. We're not expecting it to be cheap.
