Phil Schiller, the Apple executive in charge of the company's Mac ranges, introduced the new Mac Pro at the company's developer conference on Monday.

After a high-impact video with a heavy bass, Schiller told the 6,000 attendees at the event: "Can't innovate any more, my arse!"

Apple's new Mac Pro, a line of desktop computers that has not received a significant update in several years, is one-eighth the size of the old Mac Pro. The revamped desktop is notably just 9.9 inches tall with a diameter of just 6.6 inches, and it's the company's first computer to be assembled in the United States.

The new Mac Pro comes with a completely different look and tries to break away from the customary design of a desktop machine. Apple said it had to rethink the architecture of its internal components and centre everything around a unified thermal core, so the company created a "much leaner, lighter, quieter, and far more streamlined structure".

Despite the smaller frame, the new Mac Pro is a powerhouse when it comes to tech specs, with support for new processors, new memory, Thunderbolt 2 and up to three 4K screens.

Specifically, Intel's upcoming Xeon processors - coupled with ECC memory, new PCIe flash storage and external expansion via six Thunderbolt 2 ports - will debut in the new Mac Pro, with configurations offering up to 12 cores of processing power.

Meanwhile, a dual workstation AMD FirePro GPUs will handle all the graphics. With such power, users will be able to seamlessly edit full-resolution 4K video and simultaneously render effects in the background.

"It is a Mac unlike we've ever made," added Schiller.

Release date

Pixar engineers will give a preview of the Mac Pro to developers at WWDC on Tuesday, but the new computer will not release until later this year.
