Sony Mobile has announced three smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2019, all of which not only feature 21:9 aspect ratio displays but new names too. Yes, Sony has finally attempted to simplify its complicated naming strategy.

Top of the range is the Xperia 1, which replaces the Xperia XZ Premium range, while the "super mid-range" sees the Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus introduced, rather than the XA3 and XA3 Plus as rumours first suggested.

The Xperia 1 has a 6.5-inch 21:9 OLED display with a 4K resolution and HDR. It offers a premium, waterproof glass body, a triple 12-megapixel lens camera system on the rear co-developed with Sony Alpha. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 powers it with 6GB of RAM and 128G of storage.

Other stand out features include Dolby Atmos Sound, a Creator Mode for watching content as close as possible to how a director would want you to see it and a Focus Mode for gaming that blocks notifications and releases RAM.

The Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus both feature metal unibody designs, though neither are waterproof. The Xperia 10 is the smaller device with a 6-inch 21:9 LCD display offering a Full HD+ resolution, while the Xperia 10 Plus has the same screen but bumps the size up to 6.5-inches.

The Xperia 10 Plus runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage, while the Xperia 10 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 with 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage. Both have a dual rear camera but only the Plus model has optical zoom.

All three of the new Sony Xperia models offer microSD expansion up to 512GB and they all run Android 9 with Sony's software over the top. This software includes features like a Multi-Window user interface that allows for two apps running simultaneously at the top and bottom of the display.

The Sony Xperia 1 will be available late spring for around £849/$949. The Sony Xperia 10 and 10 Plus will be available from 25 February for £329 and £429, respectively.
