Warner Bros and Epic Games have joined forces for a real-time demo of Unreal Engine 5 set in The Matrix universe.

The Matrix Awakens is an interactive experience available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It is designed to show off UE5 in spectacular fashion.

Starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss - who also reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively in The Matrix Resurrections out later this month - the demo has also been made in collaboration with director Lana Wachowski.

It is available to download on the PlayStation and Xbox stores now, having officially launched as part of The Game Awards 2021 on Thursday. A trailer for it can be seen below.

"Created by members of the original movie team including Lana Wachowski along with Epic Games and partners, The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is a wild ride into the reality-bending universe of The Matrix that features performances by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss," says the demo's description.

"Get ready for a glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment with UE5 in this free, boundary-pushing cinematic and real-time tech demo."

The demo itself is interactive and split into two distinct sections. After being introduced by digital versions of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, you take part in a high-speed, linear car chase whereby you have to shoot the tyres of the vehicles behind you.

Then there is an open-world section for you to explore, which shows off Unreal Engine 5's AI traffic and pedestrian abilities in a realistic setting. To think it is almost all being rendered in real-time, it really is quite incredible.
