Such is the way with the tech world and rumours, no sooner had we published a story about the AirPods 2 releasing alongside the new iPads on 29 March and there's another, unconfirmed report that the new wireless earbuds might not make it to market in spring at all.
Posted by the often reliable @OnLeaks, the latest leak says that, instead of AirPods 2, Apple will soon release the long-awaited wireless charging case for the originals. It will be shipped with first generation AirPods, he writes.
Some #AirPods2 details I got from a new and yet unconfirmed but seemingly reliable source. Thus, I can't vouch these at 100%...— Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks) February 12, 2019

That means you'll have an even longer wait for AirPods 2 than originally thought. They were rumoured to be coming throughout the tail end of 2018, but that never happened either.
One consolation is that @OnLeaks' source told him that the new version will come in alternative colours.
In the meantime, we'll just have to make do with the much promised AirPower wireless charging mat instead. That is said to be coming with the iPad mini 5 and new standard iPad. For now, at least.
Let's just all keep our fingers crossed, eh?
We'll bring you more as we get it.
