There are two things that you can rely on Gameloft to do.

The first is to take successful console titles and give them its own distinctive flavour.

The second, is to make cracking games that sell for cheap prices.

And today's App of The Day is no exception.

Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus

Let's not beat around the bush. We all know what title Gameloft had in mind with this app (if you don't you're either not into games, or you've been living down a hole like a Chilean miner).

But let's ignore the fact that the game suffers from a lack of originality, at least with its title and premise, and instead focus on what the game has to offer.

And boy, does it offer a lot. MC2 is, without doubt, the finest FPS that we've seen on the iPhone 4 so far, beating other Gameloft titles such as NOVA and Zombie Infection to that honour.

The gameplay is simply terrific. It's just so smooth. In fact, it's so good that you often forget that you're playing on a small screen - it really does draw you in. We particularly love the kill streak features (and slick animation) and the super slow effect you get when you kick down a door, which allows you to blow a few heads off before you're enemies have a chance to think.

Yeah sure, these are Modern Warfare 2 rip-offs, but they are so brilliantly done on the small screen that it doesn't seem to matter.

Controls are easy - one hand to steer and shoot and one hand to navigate. You'll also be able to throw grenades, launch rockets and slit the odd throat or two along the way. There's even gyro-based advanced control options for the iPhone 4.

You play as one of three characters across 12 battlefields set in the Middle-East, Eastern Europe and South America. There are 15 weapons for you to get your hands on, each with its own unique, and often devastating action.

The multiplayer options are brilliant as well (if you can find a suitable match or group to play in). Signing in with your Gameloft Live credentials (free to set up) you can take part in 10-player online battles in either Battle, Team Battle, Defuse the Bomb or Capture the Flag mode.

The graphics and visuals are also stunning, especially on the iPhone 4's retina display.

This really is a fantastic game, and an absolute steal at less than £4. Get it now, and get online. This Pocket-linter's got a grenade with your name on it.
