It seems Microsoft may be planning a response to the imminent big Apple event today with the surprise (read: unlikely) news coming in that the company plans a product announcement of their own.

A tipster has got in touch with CrunchGear stating that Microsoft will announce the much-rumoured Blu-ray-enabled Xbox 360 today.

The source says: "I've got a close friend who works at Microsoft, previously with the HD-DVD division and now in the E&D division (Xbox, Zune)".

"I’m told MS will upstage Apple with a Monday 9am PDT announcement (1 hour before WWDC) via press release that the Xbox 360 will get Blu-Ray before Christmas. Price was 'under the current Elite', but i could get any more details."

A letter sent from Microsoft's Windows Mobile division rallying partners ahead of what is expected to be the launch of the 3G iPhone seemed to suggest the company were not planning any kind of news to "spoil" the Apple announcement.

In addition, Microsoft has repeatedly denied the possibility of the Xbox getting a Blu-ray drive.
