Microsoft is to add a Pizza Hut application to its Xbox Live service that will enable hungry US customers to order food through their Xbox 360 games consoles. And it will be Kinect-controlled too, so you might burn off a few calories in doing so - just in time to replace them and many more besides.

The app can also be controlled by voice and features the entire Pizza Hut menu in the States. You can choose and place your order within the software, and even link it to an Xbox Live account to save orders for re-ordering or to be sent localised deals. Facebook integration will also be included, so you can let your friends know what you're having for dinner.

Speaking to gaming site Polygon, Xbox's Major Nelson (Larry Hyrb) said that the Xbox user base is an ideal target for take-away food brands. "We're always looking at ways to give our audience more of what they're interested in," he said. "If you look at our audience, they love pizza. I mean, who doesn't? It has international appeal, and Pizza Hut is a recognized brand that matches up well with the Xbox brand."

Although the scheme will go live in the US first, with the app being available to American Xbox Live members at some point today (23 April), the "international" part of Hryb's quote would suggest that it could be coming to the UK in the future.

He also hinted that this kind of experience will be very important to the Xbox 720, or whatever it may be called, as well as extending the life of the company's existing generation console. "We've made a massive investment in Xbox Live as a service, and as a centre of gravity for the console, and we will continue to create more content and invest in the service," Major Nelson told Polygon. "That service is a differentiating factor in the current [console] marketplace. We are confident in continuing development in that area and making the right investments.

"Xbox Live is a tremendous force in the living room. With all the streaming you can do and the games you can play... It's not necessarily about bringing in next-gen, it's about what's right for the living room space."
