Microsoft has confirmed that it's going to be turning off Xbox Live at midnight tonight. Not the 360 version - that'll keep running - but the original Xbox's matchmaking and online play facilities.
The plans were originally announced in February, and met with pretty much no protest from gamers, who'd long upgraded to a more modern console. It'll mean that games like Battlefront 2, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty 2 and Halo 2 will no longer operate in multiplayer mode, though titles with single-player will still function.
The reasoning is that Microsoft has to make changes to the service that aren't compatible with the original Xbox. The company said that these changes are necessary to keep Xbox Live growing above its current 23 million-strong userbase.
Anyone for one last bash to mark the console's passing?
