EA has announced that its Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition will be released for PlayStation 3 in March, bringing the popular Command & Conquer franchise to Sony's console for the first time.

The Ultimate Edition will include everything from last year’s release of Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 for PC and Xbox 360, but will take advantage of the PS3's Blu-ray disc capacity and also feature an array of bonus content.

"Our team has been dedicated to bringing the RTS genre to console gamers and we are excited to have this opportunity to introduce PS3 owners to Command & Conquer", said David Seeholzer, development director at EA Los Angeles.

And it seems the delay in the PS3 release may well have been worth the wait.

Seeholzer added: "The PS3 is a very powerful platform, and the extra time we have had in development has helped us create the ultimate console RTS experience, with better graphics, improved performance, a ton of extras and some nice exclusive perks that cannot be found on any other version of Red Alert 3".

The extras include five new multiplayer maps, a number of behind the scenes videos and trailers including bloopers and outtakes, and PS3 exclusive Command & Conquer TV programming. This will include PS3-dedicated BattleCast PrimeTime and a special episode of Conman School focused on tips, tricks and strategies.

There will also be in-depth profiles on all the Red Alert 3 units and the official soundtrack.

Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 has often hit the headlines for its celebrity cast that includes Gemma Atkinson, Jenny McCarthy and David Hasselhoff, but reviews of the PC and 360 versions were pretty good too. Here's hoping the PS3 version delivers as well when it hits the shelves in March.
