Despite delays for the new firmware in Japan, Sony has announced the availability of the latest system software update for the PSP in the UK.
Version 3.90 will enable all owners of the new PSP Slim & Lite (or PSP 2000) to make and receive VoIP phone calls.
Sony says the addition of the Skype functionality means that the PSP can now "claim to be a highly cost effective and accessible portable communications device".
To use Skype on PSP, users need to upgrade to system software 3.90, register with Skype and then, using a headset and remote control, are ready to get chatting.
Also added through the update is the icon for the Go!Messenger service that promises video and voice chat, as well as other features, that will be available at the end of February.
The icon means users can click through a website to find out more about the forthcoming services.
