Sony has announced that over the past 5 years it has managed to ship 100 million PlayStation2 consoles breaking the record as the fastest computer entertainment platform to reach this remarkable figure.

This achievement comes within 5 years and 9 months since its launch in Japan in March 2000, 3 years and 9 months faster in penetration speed compared to its predecessor, PlayStation.

PlayStation was the first computer entertainment platform ever to reach the 100 million mark, achieved in 9 years and 6 months since launch.

Almost 80% of the shipments are outside Japan with North America and UK/Europe taking the largest bulk of the 100,000 shipments.

The company also said that there are some 6,200 titles available for the console.

The company has yet to announce a launch date for its next generation console the PlayStation3, although rumours suggest that it could be Easter next year with a price around £300.
