Sony has announced the US arrival of the popular HBO Go app on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, sure to please subscribers to the premium cable network in the States.

The HBO Go app will land first on the PlayStation 3, and will follow on the PlayStation 4, Phil Rosenberg, SVP of business development at Sony, said on the company's blog. Specific launch dates were not detailed.

The app is available on a number of platforms, and will allow cable subscribers to access popular HBO shows including Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and True Detective from their Sony device. HBO Go offers every episode of every season of HBO’s top shows, so it's definitely a benefit to have on as many platforms as possible.

Over on the competing side, the HBO Go app is currently available for Xbox 360 and is said to be coming to Xbox One sometime in 2014. Like with the service itself, there are currently no plans for UK release of the console applications.
