More details have emerged regarding the Orbis, Sony’s follow-up to the PS3 or possible Kinect rival.

Website IGN, which favours the PS3 successor school of thought, claims to have been told that Orbis will use custom chips similar to AMD’s A8-3850 APU and Radeon HD 7670 GPU.

That’s all well and good, but what exactly will it mean? Basically, better graphics, while with its quad-core 2.9GHz processor the A8-3850 promises a powerful punch, to boot.

What is worth noting is that the HD 7670 card boasts the same specs as the chip that is rumoured to be being used in Microsoft’s new Xbox 720.

So the Sony Orbis is to go head-to-head against the Xbox 720? Possibly, though contrary rumours suggest the Orbis might in fact be more of a Kinect rival after conceptual illustrations were leaked.

With a launch date not expected until Christmas 2013, expect the rumour mill to be churning out far more ifs and maybes before then.

What do you think the Orbis will be? Let us know.
