Nintendo is reportedly announcing a new updated version of its DS handheld console this morning according to retailers in the Far East.

According to gaming industry magazine MCV, its "impeccable source in Japan, Satoru Iwata will make the announcement at 5am UK time" on Thursday.

Although the magazine doesn't offer any more details of what the new console will look like or specs it will feature, rumours already circulating on the Internet range from the handheld console getting a digital camera to bigger displays top and bottom.

Earlier in the week Japanese newspaper Nikkei said that Nintendo was launching the new console with an MP3 player and camera function.

MCV suggests that the handheld console is expected to be launching before Christmas pointing out that in Japan the Nintendo DS is currently trailing the Sony PSP in sales.
