Analysts at NPD Group have released the final figures for sales in the gaming market over the holiday period in the US.
Pocket-lint.co.uk previously reported that the Xbox 360 outsold both the Wii and the PS3 in the US, with around 2 million of the consoles selling in November and December.
Nintendo accounted for more than half of all consoles sold in the US during the same period, and shifted more than 1.6 million Nintendo DS handhelds in December alone.
In December, over 600,000 Wiis were sold in the US, while Sony sold around 490,700 PS3s, and the Xbox 360 outdid both at 1.1 million.
The video game market received a boost from the release of the two next-generation consoles from Nintendo and Sony, with sales increasing 28% in December, with overall sales up 19% for the year.
Hardware alone jumped to $1.6 billion, up nearly 60% from the previous year.
According to NPD, the top selling game was Gears of War for the Xbox 360, followed by Guitar Hero II for the PS2, and Madden NFL 07 for PS2.
