The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, one of the most loved games in the series, was originally released for the Nintendo Gameboy more than 25 years ago.

Nintendo has announced that this utter classic is now being remade for Nintendo Switch.

This is actually the third time the game has been remade, the first being in 1998 for the Gameboy Colour and the second was in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.

With this modern re-imagining, the company is letting players once again return to the island of Koholint. This time around the game will have a stylish 3D aesthetic but will retain the top-down and side-scrolling views of the original.

Gaming has certainly come a long way since the original released way back in the hazy days of 1993. Fans of the series will no doubt be excited by this new announcement, we know we are.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild was one of our favourite games for the Switch, so it makes perfect sense for Nintendo to release even more Zelda games on the hand-held platform, even if they are in very different styles.

We don't have many more details on the game at this point, other than it will be released for the Switch later this year.
