Mario Kart 8 will launch on 30 May for the Wii U, Nintendo announced during its Direct event on Thursday.

The new Mario Kart title will bring drivers karts that can turn into hovercraft, submarines and gliders, alongside anti-gravity features, like the ability to drive on upside down tracks.

Nintendo has placed a big emphasis on multi-player, so much the company has told Pocket-lint that Mario Kart 8 will be the biggest online effort it has ever attempted.

The game will add new features and a HD twist, but keep with the same Mario Kart formula that Nintendo has made famous over the years. It presumably hopes Mario Kart 8 can draw in engagement to its struggling Wii U console.

Nintendo showed a new trailer for Mario Kart 8 during its Direct event, revealing Bowser's Koopaling minions will be playable in the new racing title.
