Nintendo has announced a host of new games for the Wii U, most of which you won't be able to play until next year. Opting to avoid a E3 conference this year, and we can see why, Nintendo instead used a Nintendo Direct video to announce the Wii U console lineup.

The lid has finally been lifted on the future of 3D Mario and Mario Kart. Super Mario Worlds is basically a 3D version of Super Mario Bros 2, letting you choose from different Mario characters with different abilities. While the gameplay shown was fairly short, it looks to be shaping up rather nicely. Nintendo traditionally gets it right with Mario games, so let's hope Super Mario Worlds manages the same. The game will be arriving by Christmas this year.

As for Mario Kart 8, Nintendo has extended the transforming vehicles idea seen in the last title. Now drivers karts can turn into hovercraft, submarines and gliders. There is the usual selection of tracks and vehicles to enjoy, with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer and Nintendo saying it will be the biggest online effort it has ever attempted. Unfortunately it's not coming until spring 2014, which is after both Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles have been released.

For those who enjoy Nintendo's family games, the promised Wii U Fit and Wii Party U, which was planned for a summer launch, has now been delayed until Christmas. It's going to be a very quiet summer from Nintendo. Nintendo also had new footage of The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD remake on the Wii U. It looks good, but isn't due out until October.

Not seen previously was a new take on Donkey Kong Country. The 3D side scrolling game will be due out later this year and features multiplayer and single-player gaming with all the classic Donkey Kong Country characters.

The only game you will be able to load into you Wii U anytime soon however is the Wonderful 101, which is due out on 24 August.

It isn't shaping up to be a great year for the Wii U. Most third-party developers have dropped the console in favour of the new Xbox and PS4, so owners will be stuck waiting for Nintendo to release its own games, which aren't due for a good while.

Shame really as Nintendo slipped in footage of the new Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS game right at the end of its press conference. For most Nintendo fans this will be enough to hold out until then. Featuring new characters, including Mega Man, Smash Bros is due out in 2014.
