Nintendo could be about to launch a larger version of the 3DS at the E3 gaming convention on Tuesday, if reports in the Japanese paper Nikkei are true.

Although the company said on Sunday night that its E3 press conference would focus on Wii U games and the expected launch line of for the new console, the newspaper says Nintendo has other ideas.

According to the Nikkei, the new XL-sized Nintendo 3DS will come with a 4.3-inch display rather than the 3.53-inch panel of the existing model.

Nintendo has a track-record of supersizing its gaming handhelds, with the Nintendo DSi XL being a scaled-up iteration of the original DSi, points out Slashgear - which was first to pick up the story out of Japan.

On Sunday Nintendo detailed the Wii U's new controller The Wii U GamePad, as well as other features of the operating system including something Nintendo calls the Miiverse and Mii Wara Wara.
