Several sources are reporting that Nintendo has filed a trademark application in Japan for a mystery "Zii" product. Details are light, but the trademark covers "video games and electronic devices", so it could be anything, really.

However, some think that the trademark is just an attempt to block the branding of Creative's Zii Egg - a handheld "stem cell computing" platform and touchscreen media player that'll run either Android or the company's own Plaszma OS.

On the one hand, the Zii has been called the Zii for some time, but on the other hand, the Wii is older still and it'd be easy to accuse Creative of ripping off Nintendo's name in the first place.

It'll be interesting to see, however, if Nintendo ends up using the trademark or whether it just lets it sit there gathering dust. If it turns into anything more concrete, we'll be sure to let you know.
