The number of consoles in the UK has almost doubled, according to data released by Chart Track.

The installed base for all five consoles has gone from 8.8 million to 17.3 million in the past12 months.

Each console has shown growth on last year's figures, but as expected, some have been more improved than others.

Rival next-gens PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, have both sold a million units each since this time last year, when their installed base was 0.4 million and 1.3 million respectively.

Yet it is the Nintendo Wii that has really got the stronghold in the UK, with a jump from 1.1 million units sold in September 2007, to the 3.6 million units installed today, showing sales of the console have more than doubled in 12 months.

The Wii's younger sibling, the DS is doing similarly well with figures rising from 3.8 million to 7.1 million in the same period, with the PSP showing slightly less impressive growth with sales budging from 2.2 million to 2.9 million in the past year.

And if that wasn't enough figures for you, High Street retailer The Game Group has also predicted that the installed base for the five consoles will rise by another 4.6 million by Christmas. Santa's elves better get to working.
