Microsoft has announced that it's going to roll out a games-on-demand service for its "Games For Windows Live" platform, mirroring a similar move for its Xbox Live platform earlier in the year.

Various titles will be available at launch, including Resident Evil 5, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Battlestations Pacific, along with a small indie catalogue that contains smash hit World of Goo. User will be able to buy games with either a credit card or using Microsoft's points system.

Microsoft's general manager of Live Engagement Services, Mike Ybarra, told MCV: "With Games on Demand, we didn’t just want to create a cut-and-paste version of existing digital distribution services".

"We challenged ourselves to deliver an integrated platform that takes full advantage of the unique capabilities offered by the Live service. Our goal has always been to create a seamless online gaming experience for the Windows community, and Games on Demand is a great step toward that end".

The service will go up against Valve's market-leading Steam application, which also offers games-on-demand services to PC gamers. Given the lack of enthusiasm (and occasional utter hatred) for Microsoft's existing Games for Windows Live functionality among gamers, it's hard to see Microsoft gaining much success with its offering, but we'll keep an eye on it.
