Archival Disc is the name given to a new project that Sony and Panasonic have teamed up to create. It could offer a next-generation alternative to Blu-ray discs.

The plan is to offer a more secure optical disc storage method for professional use as archiving grows. This means Archival Disc will be more resilient than current efforts and offer far greater storage.

Archival Disc is aimed at professional use initially, but we could imagine it may catch on. The plan is to offer a 300GB disc by the summer of 2015 with a 1TB version coming further down the line. Perhaps 4K video will make it onto a disc rather than just being streamed after all.

Sony and Panasonic sing the praises of the optical disc saying its a way of offering "inter-generational compatibility" between different formats as the standard matures.
