It seems that low customer take-up could be the reason behind a price cut from Apple for the current version of the 3.0 iPod touch update.

When announced back in March, and then available in June, the then 3.0 firmware update cost iPod touch owners £5.99 in the UK and $9.99 in the US.

Now, the recently announced 3.1 update is priced at £2.99 in the UK and $4.95 in the States.

9to5Mac points to a report from mobile ads firm AdMob which suggested only 1% of iPod touch users accessing its ad network had upgraded to V.3.0 software, compared to 44% of iPhone users.

Splashing out for the 3.1 update - available now - will give users new iTunes Genius features, Stereo Bluetooth, OTA downloads, better search and other improvements.
