iPod gets no love at Apple's latest refresh - except for space grey colour

Tim Cook excited the crowds with the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C tonight. With new 64-bit A7 chips and Touch ID fingerprint, readers you would be forgiven for forgetting the iPod.

And it looks like Apple has forgotten it too - or at the very least left the ageing music box by the wayside. Is this the beginning of the end for the iPod?

At this stage Apple has updated the devices to such a high standard that it's probably becoming difficult to cram in any more while still hitting that price point the kids who want it can afford.

The only surprising thing to be missed was that M7 motion coprocessor that enhances movement analysis for the Nike Move app. This would surely be perfect for the iPod Nano or Shuffle? Perhaps it's too advanced to be crammed in such a small shell and at a low price.

Here's hoping the tech drops in price soon so it can help keep the iPod market alive. Especially after Apple discontinued the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5.

Update: It appears one of the iPhone 5S' new colour options is now available for the iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod shuffle. This further indicates the iPod line might not get an update this year. Still, for those interested, the existing 32GB and 64GB iPod touch model, which sports a 4-inch Retina display and aged A5 chip, is now available in space grey. The iPod nano and iPod shuffle will also ship in space grey.
