With all the talk regarding Apple's event on 1 September focused firmly on new iPod touches (with Facetime?) or a revamped, budget-style, Apple TV; the poor little iPod nano has gone well and truly unmentioned.

But we can now add a new nano to the list of possible announcements after a few pictures of supposed sixth-generation iPod nano cases have emerged from Chinese manufacturer X-Doria.

If the cases prove to be for an actual Apple device, rather than the latest Chinese copy, then we could be looking at the very first iPod nano touch being launched.

The cases not only hint at a touchscreen UI, but also a much squarer design than the current incumbent, that went widescreen back in 2008 with the fourth-gen nano.

Maybe they are not nano cases after all, but touchscreen iPod shuffle cases.

Like the iPod touch, updates to the nano have been announced annually every September, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see a new nano launched. What would be a surprise though, would be if Apple lost the widescreen aspect that it already has in place.

Mind you, the iPad has a 4:3 aspect ratio, so you never know.
