Amazon has announced the latest addition to the Kindle world - Kindle Singles.

Nope, the e-retail king isn't trying to save the music industry, or releasing instant coffee packs to keep you awake whilst you finish off the latest Terry Pratchett novel on your ebook baby - Kindle Singles are mini-books that it feels will sit perfectly on the eBook reader platform.

"Ideas and the words to deliver them should be crafted to their natural length, not to an artificial marketing length that justifies a particular price or a certain format", said Russ Grandinetti, vice president at Kindle Content.

"With Kindle Singles, we're reaching out to publishers and accomplished writers and we're excited to see what they create".

Amazon described how Kindle Singles would be "twice the length of a New Yorker feature or as much as a few chapters of a typical book".

The Singles titles will have their own section in the Kindle Store, and will be much cheaper than normal books.

We're going to submit our own version of Lord of The Rings. It's much shorter because Frodo and the gang just use the Eagles to get to Mordor, like they do to return in the original, thus eliminating all the bother in between.

Sure, it's not such an epic tale - but it's far more plausible.
