Magellan hasn’t been seen in the UK for a couple of years and now mark their return with the launch of four new handheld GPS devices for outdoor activities.

Pitched at those engaging in outdoor endeavours, all the models in the eXplorist range are waterproof (IPX-7) and offer a similar robust design centred around a colour screen, with a useful bottom loop for easy attachment so you don’t lose it.

Each device differs in specs, incrementally stepping up in functionality as you go. At the entry-level is the eXplorist GC, a dedicated geocaching device offering a 2.2-inch display and easy controls. You’ll find a selection of popular geocaches preloaded and worldwide mapping, with the Magellan VantagePoint software letting you add new geocaches to seek out (as it will on the other devices too).

Stepping up the range the other three models, the eXplorist 510, 610 and 710, offer a 3-inch touchscreen and camera, as well as a speaker and microphone, so you can make voice notes and take quick geotagged photos.

The 610 and 710 offer enhanced navigation functions including a 3-axis electronic compass, barometric altimeter and a Summit Series Topographical map.

At the top of the range, the 710 also offers turn-by-turn street navigation (from Navteq), so you’ll be able to drive with it on the roads, as well as being able to navigate cross country.

All the devices run on AA batteries, so if your adventure keeps you away from a power socket you can replace them as you need. They also feature a Mini-USB connection to hook up to your PC for data transfer. The USB will power the device when connected, but not charge the batteries inside.

Pricing starts at £179.99 for the eXplorist GC, the 510, 610 and 710 are £299.99, £399.99 and £499.99 respectively.
