Huawei is officially going up against the likes of Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri with its own voice assistant.

For the first time, it is developing a voice assistant that'll be available outside of China, where Huawei already has a voice assistant. Called Xiaoyi, it lives in its AI Cube smart speaker and smartphones, but it's only for the Chinese. Now, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business, is confirming to CNBC it's working on either a new version or entirely new one for use in other countries.

"We are using our own in China, in (the) future we will also have our own outside of China," he said. "In the beginning, we are mainly using Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa [for its AI Cube and smartphones] . . . We need more time to build our AI (artificial intelligence) services."

He added: "Later we will expand this outside of China."

Huawei will continue working with Amazon and Google, he explained. So, to be clear, it is still reliant on third-party voice assistants.

If we had to be honest, we doubt Huawei will be able to grab a share of the voice assistant market in the US. Even Samsung's Bixby, which tries to go up against Alexa and Google Assistant, has been critically panned. If Samsung is having trouble making headway in the US, we can't see Huawei doing much better.
