The wearable tracker market is really taking off and now Toshiba has joined it with its first activity tracker, the WERAM1100.

Putting the not-so catchy name aside this band could still compete against the big players despite being late to the race for your wrist. Toshiba claims that, unlike most of the competition, its device will only need a charge every two weeks.

The WERAM1100 measures steps taken, calories burned and sleep statistics. There's not a direct readout on the device itself but this probably helps offer that longer battery life. The fact that it automatically switches into sleep tracking mode as it recognises your change of activity is a nice bonus. But we'll reserve judgement until it's out to see if this works – we imagine a movie session might be mistaken for a nap.

The two week battery life is definitely the big sell on this device. That said Garmin has released its Vivofit which uses a watch-like battery to deliver well over a year's use before it needs to be replaced.

The Toshiba WERAM1100 wristband is available for pre-order, in Japan only for now, in black, light grey, pink and blue-green. Shipping will begin on 20 August.
