The original Samsung Gear Fit was released two years ago, so it was about time that we had a refresh.
That comes in the form of the Samsung Gear Fit2, which is now confirmed and will be available soon. It is joined on the launch schedule by wireless earbuds for runners and fitness fans, the Samsung Gear IconX, which look to be an interesting alternative to conventional trackers.
So here is everything we know about the Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX, to give you an idea of what kind of devices they are and when you can get hold of them.
Samsung Gear Fit2 / Gear IconX: Release date and price
The Samsung Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX devices are now official.
Although we're still awaiting pricing for both, the Gear Fit2 will be available from 10 June in the UK.
The Gear IconX earphones will follow in July.
Samsung Gear Fit2 / Gear IconX: Design
The Gear Fit2 features a 1.5-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a 432 x 216 pixel resolution. It is touch-enabled, like most Samsung products, so you can browse through functions easily.
It is more solid than the original Gear Fit, with a more sleek and sturdy band. It also has a slightly mottled effect for texture.
The screen is better built into the band, as the last model's display was slightly lifted from the design.
Samsung claims it is more ergonomic than before, with two sizes available: small (125-170mm wrist size) and large (155-220mm).
It comes in black, blue or pink.
The Samsung Gear IconX comes with two separate earphones that are completely wire free. They look a bit like conventional earbuds, but with a protusion that houses the Bluetooth technology and even 4GB of storage to add music tracks locally.
They can be set to switch on when they are placed in a user's ears, and a touch panel gives control over music playback and other functionality.
The Gear IconX earphones come in black, blue or white and have a variety of eartips and wingtips to suit different ear shapes.
Samsung Gear Fit2 / Gear IconX: Hardware and specs
The Gear Fit2 runs on a dual-core 1GHz processor, with 512MB of RAM. It has 4GB of storage to add audio files, with many supported, including MP3, WMA, WAV and AAC.
As it has Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity, you can hook it up to wireless headphones and therefore not require a phone when you go for a run, for example.
Built-in sensors include an accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, barometer and GPS.
It has a 200mAh battery and is IP68 certified, so can be submerged down to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes.
Measurements are 24.5 x 51.2mm. The small version weighs 28g, while the large is 30g.
The Gear IconX earphones have Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity and sport an accelerometer and heart rate sensor, so can be used independently when working out.
Each earbud has a 47mAh battery, while an included charging case has a 315mAh battery to keep them topped up when out and about.
Dynamic speaker drivers are in each earbud, plus microphones. And they measure 18.9 x 26mm. Each earbud weighs 6.3g.
There is also 4GB of storage available in one of the buds.
Samsung Gear Fit2: Software
The original Gear Fit ran on Samsung's own wearable platform called Real Time OS (RTOS), but as with many Samsung wearable devices these days, the Gear Fit2 is Tizen-based.
One of the band's new features is called Auto Activity Tracking. It basically assesses what activity you are undertaking and then adjusts what data it prioritises to suit. Running, walking, cycling or using a rowing machine, say, will be automatically sensed by the device.
It also comes with a standalone music player, so you don't need any other mobile device when you're working out.
That said, it can be hooked up to a handset too and is compatible with Android 4.4 and above, as long as the phone has 1.5GB of RAM or more. That way it can link up with Samsung's own S Health software for data tracking.
The Gear IconX headphones also link to S Health and have identical compatibility with Android devices.
They too work as a standalone music player and also come with Voice Guide, which will speak to you and give you information about your workout progress.
The can track distance, speed, duration, heart rate and calories burned.
Samsung Gear Fit2 / Gear Icon X: Conclusion
The Samsung Gear Fit2 is a step up from the original for sure, but essentially offers the same kind of tracking capabilities. The fact that it works completely independently to a mobile phone, while still giving access to 4GB worth of music tracks, is an excellent incentive for those who don't want to take much out on a run.
More intriguing though is the Gear IconX earphones, which also have music playback abilities but don't require the use of a separate pair of headphones.
