Garmin has announced its next generation of activity tracker following on from the vivofit, its new vivosmart will not only track a person but will also connect to their smartphone to display notifications.

The Garmin vivosmart features a touchscreen OLED display that's capable of alerting you to calls, texts, calendar reminders emails and more. Users can swipe through to read notifications including text messages. It can also be used to show step count, distance travelled, calories burned, goal countdown and more.

The vivosmart band is waterproof up to 5 atmospheres water depth and has a battery life of up to seven days. An at-a-glance "move bar" shows five segments that fill in each chunk after each hour of activity. This should give a quick view of progress much like Nike does with its FuelBand SE.

The vivosmart is able to vibrate so as to make notifications more obvious. This can also work to show when goals are met and vibrate to make sure you keep active. This can also be used as a subtle vibrating alarm each day. The vivosmart can also be paired with a heart rate monitor or bike speed sensor. It can even be used as a remote controller for the Garmin VIRB action cameras.

The Garmin vivosmart automatically sync with a mobile using the Garmin Connect Mobile app, via Bluetooth. This data can also be synched with third party app MyFitnessPal.

The Garmin vivosmart will be available in berry, purple, blue, black and slate in small or large sizes from October. Pricing has not been announced yet.
