Garmin has announced its latest golf handhelds to join the Approach range: the G7 and G8.

Both devices feature colour touchscreens with more than 30,000 preloaded international courses. The battery will last for several rounds before needing a charge (15 hours), even if you can't.

New to the range is PlaysLike Distance which shows adjusted range for uphill and downhill shots. The new Approach handhelds also allow golfers to leave their phones in their bags as they will deliver alerts for texts, emails and more.

Both devices also offer Club Advice which remembers how far users hit with each club and makes recommendations based on shot distance. Then there's Big Numbers mode which delivers clear at-a-glance figures on the display. Touch the on-screen map at any point and the Approach will tell you the exact distance to that point, even offering a detailed Green View for putting.

The Garmin Approach S7 and S8, which double as digital scorecards, work with iPhone 4S and later devices for notifications. Both are IPX7 water-resistant.

The more expensive G8 offers a 3-inch display, Wi-Fi for course updates, and PinPointer to show where the centre of the green is even if it's not visible, for more-accurate blind shots.

The Garmin Approach G7 will be £290 and the Approach G8 will be £370. Both devices will be available online before April and in golf shops.
