Health tracking just took a turn for the weird, thanks to a new monitoring device for dogs.

Whistle, a start-up that makes an on-collar fitness device for dogs, plans to start shipping its Whistle Activity Monitor for $99.95 (£65) this summer. It's basically a disc-like gadget that measures a dog’s activities with a 3-axis accelerometer and provides related data on "day-to-day behaviour and long-term health trends".

Dog owners with a Whistle Activity Monitor can notably check-in from their phone, share photos and send detailed reports to a vet. It further allows owners to measure their dogs' sleeping patterns, set daily goals, track progress, view activity graphs and retrieve information pertaining to changes in behavior.

Why's this so important? Well, the device could proactively detect a health issue, such as arthritis or diabetes, and help vets with diagnosing. Or it just enables fitness freaks - likely wearing a Fitbit or FuelBand themselves - to get their dogs in equal shape.

The Whistle Activity Monitor is iOS-only at the moment, although an Android counterpart is coming soon, and it's waterproof. The device also wirelessly syncs over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and offers a 10-day battery life from a built-in lithium-ion polymer battery that charges with a USB dock.

Whistle's wearable tracking device fits dogs over 7lbs and is available for pre-order now.
