Adidas has bought Runtastic, a European mobile fitness startup.
In a blog post confirming the acquisition, Runtastic said it had a lot of knowledge in regards to apps and digital technology, but with Adidas, there’s nothing it couldn't do when it comes to "health and fitness offerings". Both companies are therefore hoping to build a "unique product portfolio and unparalleled customer journey".
The Runtastic app is a popular fitness-tracking software that monitors runs, jogs, bike rides, and walking. It uses GPS to map your workouts in real time. It will also calculate your time, distance, pace, elevation change, and calories. It even features a personal diary to help you monitor progress as well as a voice coach for audio feedback.
Runtastic reached out into the world of hardware last year as well, with its own activity tracker called the Orbit. Lots of other bands already worked with the Runtastic app data, including the Jawbone Up, FitBit Flex, and the Withings Pulse, but with Orbit, Runtastic seemed to be attempting to cut out the hardware middleman.
The startup now offers smartphone mounts for bikes as well as various other health-based hardware and apps. It has a new app for Oculus Rift, for instance. With so much to offer, it's no surprise that Runtastic has seen 140 million downloads and 70 million registered users globally. It's also no surprise Adidas would want to buy Runtastic.
According to several reports, the deal was worth about €220 million (£153 million). Now, if you're worried about Adidas gobbling up Runtastic and shutting it down for good, have no fear. According to Runtastic, nothing is going to change for community users at the moment. Runtastic will remain its own entity within Adidas.
That said, Runtastic also admitted it has a "whole new world of possibilities to play around with", meaning you can expect some big changes going forward.
