Although FIFA (the organisation) and EA Sports will part company soon, FIFA 23 is still on the cards.

The series will be renamed EA Sports FC from the 2023/24 season, but the final collaborative effect is well underway. We now have a release date and official details, in fact.

Here then are the latest details, trailers and everything we know so far about FIFA 23.

FIFA 23 release date

As we previously predicted, FIFA 23 will be available from 30 September 2022.

An early access period for those who purchase the FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition begins on 27 September.

FIFA 23 platforms

FIFA 23 will be available for all the same platforms as last year's game: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

There will also be a Nintendo Switch version but, as is traditional these days, it will lack several features and only be an incrimental update on last year's game.

Who are the FIFA 23 cover stars?

As with the last two years, PSG and France striker Kylian Mbappe will be a cover star. However, this year he is joined by Sam Kerr - the Chelsea and Australia forward. She alternates on the cover of the standard version with Mbappe.

They appear together on the front of the Ultimate Edition.

FIFA 23 trailer

EA released its first trailer for FIFA 23 on 20 July and it shows a fair few of the graphical and gameplay changes, including the improved HyperMotion AI engine, new free kick mechanics, and more. You can watch it below.

FIFA 23 screens

Several in-game screen grabs have been released, including action shots of each of the cover stars, Sam Kerr and Kylian Mbappe, plus Jack Grealish and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior.

In addition, there are a few stadium shots - of Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, Spur's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Atlético Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano, and Signal Iduna Park, the home of Borussia Dortmund.

FIFA 23 features and gameplay

Here are the several confirmed features for FIFA 23, as well as some of the best rumours we've spotted around the internet.

Cross-play

After succesful tests in FIFA 22, cross-play will be part of FIFA 23 from the start.

It will be available to players on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Stadia. And, unlike the trial in the last game, it will be available in multiple game modes, including FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT).

All multiplayer matches in FUT, apart from co-op, can match players across platforms. Online friendlies and seasons matches are cross-play-enabled too.

Cross-play is also availanble to PS4 and Xbox One owners, but only between the last-generation consoles.

FIFA 23 on Nintendo Switch will not feature cross-play at all.

Combined FUT transfer market

We're still awaiting full details but the FUT transfer market will also benefit from cross-platform integration. That will greatly widen the amount of players available.

World Cup

Both the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be included in FIFA 23.

Both will be delivered as post-launch free updates.

Women's leagues

While women's football has been included in previous games, it has never been fully fleshed out. Now we're getting the Barclays Women’s Super League and Division 1 Arkema so you'll be able to play as your favourite players and clubs in a proper season format.

"I'm delighted that the Barclays Women's Super League will be one of the first women’s club competitions to feature in FIFA 23, with the franchise historically having one of the largest and most engaged gaming communities in the world," said the FA's commercial director, Navin Singh.

"The added visibility a global brand like EA SPORTS will provide for our league, teams and players cannot be underestimated. This very much supports our ambition to accelerate the growth of the women's game in England, and highlights our commitment to open up the Barclays Women's Super League, and make it even more accessible, to new audiences around the globe."

HyperMotion 2

EA Sports has an upgraded version of its HyperMotion technology driving the on-field action this year. HyperMotion 2 uses the same AI-based system for physics and player movement with and without the ball but has tweaked certain elements, such as shooting ahd dribbling. There are now more than 6,000 animations players and teams can draw on during play for smoother, more responsive animations and control.

FUT chemistry

Although not much has been said about it yet, a revamped chemistry system is to debut in FUT 23. It has previously been rumoured that chemistry (the links between players from different clubs and countries) will be removed entirely. And that player positions will be set to certain parameters, to match his, her or their real-world positions and abilities. For example, Mo Salah might be able to switch between a forward and a right-winger, but cannot be changed a CAM through a card.

Icons and Heroes

Both Icons and Heroes will return to Ultimate Team with some new additions yet to be announced.

Career mode

Perhaps the biggest announcement for career mode so far is the ability to race through a season by taking control of "playable highlights" rather than entire matches. You'll still be able to do that too, of course.

Volta Football

Volta's back and seems fairly similar to last year.

Graphical tweaks and customisation

Last but not least, FIFA 23 receives numerous graphical tweaks with extra cutscenes on matchdays and much more. There will be further customisation opportunities for your teams and players, too.
