Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Watch 5 models during its Galaxy Unpacked event on 10 August.

We've covered everything you need to know about the bookstyle Z Fold 4 in a separate feature, as well as how the Galaxy Z Fold 4 compares to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in another feature.

Here we are focusing on everything you need to know about the horizontal folding flip phone - the Galaxy Z Flip 4 - though. We've also seen the device already so you can read our first impressions in our initial review if you're considering buying one.

$899 $999 Save $100

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 4 keeps what works about its clamshell foldable form factor — its adorable, space-saving design and overall versatility — and improves everything else. The display, cameras, and overall resilience of the hinge are better this year, and the new colours are just divine.

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on 10 August 2022 during Galaxy Unpacked. The device is available to pre-order immediately and will hit shelves on 26 August 2022.

In terms of price, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes in at slightly more than its predecessor. It has a starting price of £999 in the UK, compared to the Z Flip 3's £949 starting price. In the US, the device starts at $999.99

Galaxy Z Flip 4 design

  • 71.9 x 84.9 x 17.1-15.9mm (folded), 71.9 x 165.2 x 6.9mm (unfolded), 187g
  • Horizontal fold
  • Four colours, plus Bespoke Edition
  • IPX8

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip's design hasn't changed a great deal since it first launched - except the cover display - and that statement remains true in the fourth generation of the device.

On the whole, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 looks very similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, though there have been some improvements here and there. The hinge is slimmer for example, and the shock resistance has also been improved. There's also Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection and an Armour frame, though the IP rating remains at IPX8.

Other differences include a more angular frame, more prominent buttons and larger camera lenses than the Z Flip 3, delivering a more refined - though familiar - design overall.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a horizontal fold, which when unfolded expands to reveal an internal display and a punch hole camera centralised at the top. On the back, there's a dual rear camera and an external display next to it, taking up just over a third of the device. The rest of the rear is plain.

Four standard colours are available, called Graphite, Bora Purple, Pink Gold and Blue, though there is a Bespoke Edition too, which allows for 75 different customisation options. You can opt for Yellow, White, Navy, Khaki or Red for the front or back in the Bespoke Edition models. Frame choices are Silver, Black or Gold.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 display

  • 1.9-inch outer display, 260 x 512 pixels
  • 6.7-inch main display, 2640 x 1080 pixels
  • Punch-hole camera

There was talk of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 increasing the cover display size again, though this has turned out not to be the case. Instead, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 features a 1.9-inch cover display like the Z Flip 3 and a 6.7-inch main display when unfolded.

In terms of resolution, the cover display has a 512 x 260 pixel resolution, while the main display has a 2640 x 1080 pixel resolution. The main display uses a Dynamic AMOLED panel and it's an Infinity Flex Display, folding horizontally in the middle.

The main display offers a variable refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz and it offers a 22:9 aspect ratio. As we briefly mentioned, there is a punch hole camera at the top of the main display in the middle.

The cover display is a Super AMOLED panel and it's an Always On Display. There are more options than the Galaxy Z Flip 3 though, with themes running from inside the phone to the outside.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 specs

  • Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 8GB RAM
  • 128GB, 256GB, 512GB
  • 3700mAh battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, which is a step up from most flagship smartphones that have already launched in 2022.

There's 8GB of RAM support and a choice of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage, the latter of which is a new variant for the Z Flip. It is worth noting however, that storage options will vary by region.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 gets a battery increase too compared to its predecessor, with a 3700mAh capacity on board. It offers 25W wired charging, which delivers 50 per cent battery from flat in around 30 minutes with a 25W charger.

There is also Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 on board and Wireless PowerShare, which means the ability to charge another wireless charging compatible device from the Z Flip 4, like the Watch 5, for example.

There's a capacitive fingerprint sensor built into the power button on the right side of the Z Flip 4.

In terms of software, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is running Android 12 out of the box, with Samsung's One UI 4.1.1.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 cameras

  • Dual rear camera (12MP + 12MP)
  • Punch-hole front camera (10MP)

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with a dual camera on the rear with two 12-megapixel sensors - one of which is a wide angle lens with f/1.8 aperture and the other is an ultra wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture, like the Z Flip 3.

The wide sensor is 65 per cent brighter than the Z Flip 3, with pixels moving from 1.4µm to 1.8µm. This sensor has an 83-degree field of view and it has Dual Pixel AF and OIS on board. The ultra-wide sensor has a 123-degree field of view and 1.12µm pixels.

There's also a 10-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture. This sensor has an 80-degree field of view and 1.22µm pixels.
