Disney+ launched in the UK yesterday and Sky TV customers were pleased that an app appeared on their Sky Q boxes almost instantly.

However, it comes with a couple of caveats. Full integration with the Sky Q experience, in a similar way to Netflix, will take a bit longer -  it's coming at the end of April. Also, unlike the Disney+ apps for several other platforms, content on the Sky Q version is locked to 1080p.

There's no HDR, which is acceptable considering Sky Q boxes are not yet HDR-compatible, but why just HD resolutions when the service is capable of more.

Well, Pocket-lint has discovered the answer, and it has nothing to do with bandwidth limiting during the coronavirus crisis.

Instead, it seems that 2TB Sky Q boxes need a firmware update to support Disney+ in 4K - one that Sky is still working on. We found the following on the Disney+ online help centre: "At the moment, Sky Q does not support Disney+ content in UHD and customers will not be able to see 4K content options in the app. Sky is working to update its firmware that will make it possible for people to watch Disney+ UHD content later this year across UHD compatible Sky Q boxes."

You might, therefore have a while to wait to watch The Mandalorian in Ultra HD - on Sky Q boxes, at least.

Still, should you want to watch the flagship show and all the other series and films in a still very reasonable high definition, you can find the Disney+ app in the "Apps" section of the Sky Q menu.

You just need to sign in using your Disney+ account and away you go.

Sky Q gets Disney straight away but not fully integrated until April image 2

We're still awaiting details on how full integration will work when available, but do have confirmation that you will be able to subscribe to Disney+ through Sky itself at that time.

In addition, Now TV device owners will also get the dedicated app in "the coming months"

Disney+ launched in the UK, Italy, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland on Tuesday 24 March 2020, with the French government asking to delay the launch in its country until 7 April due to the coronavirus crisis.

It is also available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

It costs £5.99 per month in the UK, but there is also a seven day free trial period for new subscribers.
