How to download Amazon Prime Video shows on your phone

The process for downloading video content from Amazon Prime Video on your phone is fairly straightforward. Follow the steps below to download content from Amazon Prime Video onto your phone or tablet to view offline.

  1. Open the Amazon Prime Video app for either Android smartphones or Apple iPhones.
  2. Search for the show or movie you want to download.
  3. Tap on the 'Download Season [insert season number here]' to download an entire season. For films, you obviously have the option to download the entire thing to your device.
  4. Alternatively for shows, scroll down and download specific episodes by tapping on the tray icon with the arrow next to each episode.
  5. You can choose whether you want Prime Video to notify you when the download is finished.
  6. Tap on Downloads at the bottom of the screen to access your downloads.

Once you're finished watching, it's worth deleting the download and free up space on your phone - you can set the app to do this automatically too by tapping on 'Manage' in the Downloads section.

Also in the 'Manage' settings in the Downloads section, is the ability to turn on or off Auto Downloads. When on, you can choose how many episodes you would like to auto download with options from one to five.

You need an Amazon Prime account to do all this, but you can then download both Amazon Prime Video content and purchased films or shows this way.

How to download Amazon Prime Video shows on Windows 10

If you visit Amazon Prime Video in a browser on Windows 10, you'll see an option to download the specific show or film you're interested in. Clicking that button will take you to the Amazon Prime Video app for Windows

Download that app and log in to your Amazon Prime account. You're then presented with a pleasant and familiar interface that's similar to the smartphone one.

Search for the content you want to watch and you'll see the option to download either individual shows, entire seasons or movies directly to your device.

Once downloaded, that content is then accessible via the "Downloads" tab on the left-hand navigation within the app.

Managing storage

For both the Windows 10 app and the smartphone app, you can choose download quality options using the settings cog. This is in the bottom left corner of the Windows 10 app, or in the top right corner of the smartphone app in the My Stuff tab.

Once in the settings, tap on 'Streaming & Downloading' and then 'Download Quality'.

You can choose from these download quality options:

  • Best - 1 hour of video uses about 1.4 GB of data and storage
  • Better - 1 hour of video uses about 0.8 GB of data and storage
  • Good - 1 hour of video uses about 0.5 GB of data and storage

The settings in the Windows 10 app will let you know how much space you're using up with the downloads too and you can delete any you've finished with from the downloads section. For the smartphone app, the Downloads tab will show you this information, as mentioned above.

It is worth noting that you don't get to choose where the downloads are stored, which is a shame as it means you can't manage storage if you have larger internal or external drives working alongside your main Windows drive, or you have a microSD card in your smartphone, for example.
