The Nokia X6 is the name of yet another Nokia handset made by HMD, the company behind the resurgence in Nokia-branded devices.

It will be the first Nokia phone to have a notch in the centre of the display. Expect it to run Android 8 Oreo

The name of the device has been back and forth between X and X6 for some time now, but it has now been confirmed as the Nokia X6. As well as that notch, other design notes include a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

HMD has been keen to resurrect older Nokia names, more so since the success of the Nokia 3310 last year. The Nokia X6 name was originally seen in 2009, a Symbian-based handset that typified Nokia's woes in the face of growing competition from Android and iOS.

The Nokia X, X+ X2 and XL were also a mid-range family of phones that launched in 2014 during Microsoft's disastrous stewardship of Nokia's mobile phones division (then called Microsoft Mobile). Unlike other previous Nokia handsets at the time, these phones used a version of Android rather than Windows Phone.

Nokia X6 specs

  • Boasting Snapdragon 636 platform
  • 5.8-inch FHD+ display

The new Nokia X6 comes with a 5.8-inch Full HD+ screen with 19:9 aspect ratio, Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, 4GB or 6GB of memory and 64GB storage (there is a 32GB option).

The X6 is powered by a 3,060mAh battery, has USB-C and runs Android 8.1 Oreo

Nokia X6 camera

  • Dual-lens rear camera
  • 16 MP front snapper

There's a dual-lens rear camera with 16 and 5-megapixel sensors, while a 16-megapixel camera will adorn the front. All the cameras have f/2.0 apertures. Once again there's Nokia's split 'bothie' mode plus various other AI-powered image enhancements for colour balance and so on.

Nokia X6 price

  • Clock in around £150 if you convert to GBP
  • Three versions available, one with 64GB storage

A price leaked from Chinese retailer Suning stateed the Nokia X6 would cost 1,499 Yuan, which converts to roughly £175/$235, putting it firmly in the affordable category.

It turns out that's the middle model with 4GB/64GB - the cheaper 4GB/32GB model works out around $200/£150 which is an incredible price. The more expensive model adds an extra 2GB of memory, so it's 6GB/64GB.

Of course, these prices are straight conversions, so it will likely cost more if and when it arrives on Western shores.

We have been in touch with HMD Global about UK availability. They've now told us that "currently the Nokia X6 is exclusive to China. There are no further launch plans to announce at this time for the UK." Which doesn't mean no...

Here are all the previous rumours about the new Nokia X6

Earlier this month an advertising board appeared in China teasing an upcoming Nokia announcement, with a picture of an X, formed by two phones. It was initially believed to be referring to a single new Nokia X smartphone, but now it seems it relates to the resurrection of the Nokia X brand.

We're expecting the Nokia X launch to be on 16 May - the same day as the OnePlus 6. That would put the Nokia X release date as early June probably.

Rumours suggest the new phone will land at around the $250 mark, but that does seem low priced to us. It's not yet clear if it will make its way beyond China, but we think it likely.

Nokia X design

  • Yes, there's a notch
  • Super-thin bezels
  • Now-familiar Android-era Nokia design language

Leaked images have been doing the rounds, the latest of which is this shot which looks like it's a leaked press image.

Some renders purporting to be the Nokia X6 also appeared in China (via GSM Arena) showing the phone with incredibly slim bezels all the way round.

Nokia has once again used copper colouring for various accents on the rear panel in the above image, similar to the recently released Nokia 7 Plus. There also looks to be a piano black version according to these leaked images from Ben Geskin.

We may have got a glimpse of that new phone now as well, thanks to a hands-on video posted to Chinese social site Weibo. The 12-second video only shows the front and rear of the phone, rather than any software or menus, but it appears as though the Nokia X will have a metal and glass construction.

A dual camera can clearly be seen on the rear panel, with a fingerprint scanner beneath it. We're expecting the Nokia X - or Nokia X6 as it may be known - to be the first Nokia device to feature a notch. As we mentioned, those rumours are very much alive, but it's not entirely clear from this video if it's there or not.

When the user turns the screen on, they zoom in a bit, cutting off the top of the screen.

Nokia X specs

  • Android Oreo a given
  • Likely to have Qualcomm Snapdragon 636
  • 5.8-inch 2,280 x 1,080 19:9 display

The Nokia X has now gone through TENAA certification, confirming many of its specs in the process.

Some rumours point towards the Nokia X processor as a Mediatek Helio P60 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. A second version will likely incorporate a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage - this latter version is probably what we'll get in the UK. A 32GB version is also likely.

The Nokia X is expected to have a 5.8-inch 2,280 x 1,080 19:9 display, with a dual 12 and 16 megapixel rear camera system and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The leaked images show no Zeiss branding next to the camera lens - this is unusual as Zeiss has been a long-term partner for Nokia devices through time.

The TENAA listing also shows a 16MP front camera but doesn't say whether it will have microSD expansion. It does suggest the Nokia X will have a 3,000mAh battery - and not a 3,500mAh unit that has been rumoured - and will come running Android Oreo 8.1.
