Apple has announced a 5G iPhone 12 Pro range during its October event, for those wanting more than the company's also newly-announced standard iPhone 12 models.

The premium models will come in two sizes: an iPhone 12 Pro at 6.1-inch, and iPhone 12 Pro Max at 6.7-inch. They will each feature a polished surgical stainless-steel casing that has a similar design aesthetic as the other new iPhone 12 handsets - it also takes design cues from the iPad Pro range.

The iPhones will come in graphite, pacific blue, silver, and gold, but because of the new design, will stay virtually the same physical size as their 11 Pro equivalents even though they have bigger screens.

The two new handsets will also come with an IP68 rating to withstand being submerged in water down to 6-metres for 30 minutes.

On the specs front, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature the company's Super Retina XDR display, utilising the same OLED panel technology as before.

The range will use the same processor found in the latest iPad Air, the A14 Bionic, which was announced in September. Apple claims it runs 50 per cent faster than any other smartphone processor currently on the market.

This, says Apple, will allow the phone to do a number of new things you'll be expected to do with that 5G connection.

The iPhone 12 Pro will feature three cameras on the back: a 12-megapixel telephoto, plus wide and an ultra-wide. It will come with a 4x telephoto optical zoom in total.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will also feature three camera sensors, but with a spec and feature bump on one of them. As well as the ultrawide camera, there will be a new telephoto and wide cameras that are enhanced further over the iPhone 12 Pro. The telephoto will feature a 65mm focal length and come with a 2.5x optical zoom and optical image stabilisation, while the wide camera will come with a new f1.6 aperture 26mm focal length and larger sensor, with 1.7μm pixels.

The Max will also allow users to record in HDR and Dolby Vision - the latter a first for a smartphone. Like the iPad Pro, it will also come with a LiDAR scanner

As on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12 Pro models will come with a new screen material called Ceramic Shielding, that should mean it's less prone to scratches - something previous iPhones have suffered from.

The new iPhone will also come with MagSafe for iPhone. This features what is effectively a big magnet in the back of the phone that will not only allow you to snap a wireless charger to the rear, but other gadgets from Apple and third-parties, including a wallet accessory to store your credit cards.

In a move to reduce the environmental impact of the new devices, the new iPhone models will no longer come with headphones or charger. They will, however, come with a Lightning to USB-C charging cable.

The iPhone 12 Pro will be available to pre-order from 16 October for a 23 October shipping date, while the Pro Max will be available to pre-order on the 6 November and available to buy from the 13 November. In the US, the iPhone 12 Pro range will start from $999, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max will start at $1,099 - both for 128GB as the starter storage.

In the UK, they will start at £999 and £1,099 respectively.
