Honor announced the Honor 20 Pro at an event on 21 May, offering a quad rear camera, coupled with a striking finish and the Kirin 980 processor. Sound familiar?

You're not going mad. Honor's parent company Huawei launched the P30 Pro with those features too, but how else are the Honor 20 Pro and Huawei P30 Pro similar? And how do they differ? Here are their specs compared.

Design

  • Honor 20 Pro: 154.6 x 73.9 x 8.4mm, 182g
  • Huawei P30 Pro: 158 x 73.2 x 8.41mm, 192g

The Honor 20 Pro and the Huawei P30 Pro both offer striking finishes, with metal frames and curved glass rears. They look similar, though not identical.

The Honor 20 Pro has a punch-hole front camera in the top left its display, while the Huawei P30 Pro has a water-drop notch at the top of its display in the centre, housing the front camera. The Honor 20 Pro also has a physical fingerprint sensor on the side, while the P30 Pro has an in-display sensor.

Both feature a quad rear camera on the back in the top left corner of their builds, but the Honor 20 Pro has all four lenses within the same housing, while the Huawei P30 Pro has the fourth Time of Flight sensor to the right of the three main lenses.

In terms of measurements, the Honor and Huawei are almost on par, though the Honor 20 Pro is slightly shorter and lighter than the P30 Pro.

Display

  • Honor 20 Pro: 6.26-inches, 2340 x 1080, LCD
  • Huawei P30 Pro: 6.47-inches, 2340 x 1080, OLED

The Honor 20 Pro has a 6.26-inch IPS LCD display, which as mentioned, has a punch-hole camera in the top left corner but is otherwise uninterrupted. The punch hole camera is said to be the reason the Honor opts for LCD over OLED, although we've seen Samsung successfully navigate that problem - so we suspect it's a cost issue.

The Huawei P30 Pro has a slightly larger 6.47-inch OLED display, which means it will likely have more vibrant colours and deeper blacks than the Honor's display. It has a small notch at the top though.

Both devices opt for a Full HD+ resolution at 2340 x 1080, which means the Honor 20 Pro has a slightly sharper pixel density compared to the Huawei P30 Pro.

Camera

  • Honor 20 Pro: 48MP+16MP+8MP+2MP macro
  • Huawei P30 Pro: 40MP+20MP+8MP+ToF

The Honor 20 Pro comes with a quad rear camera setup, featuring a 48-megapixel main sensor with an aperture of f/1.4, along with a 16-megapixel super-wide angle lens with a 117-degree FOV and a f/2.2 aperture.

There is also an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture and 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom, and a 2-megapixel macro camera with an f/2.4 aperture for 4cm macro photography.

The Huawei P30 Pro meanwhile, has a 40-megapixel wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.6, coupled with an 20-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens with an aperture of f/2.2. There is also an 8-megapixel telephoto lens offering an aperture of f/3.4 and 5x optical zoom, with 50x digital zoom, while a Time-of-Flight sensor makes up the fourth lens.

Both the Huawei P30 Pro and the Honor 20 Pro have a 32-megapixel front camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

Hardware and software

  • Honor 20 Pro: Kirin 980, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, 4000mAh
  • Huawei P30 Pro: Kirin 980, 8GB RAM, 128/512GB storage, 4200mAh

Both the Honor 20 Pro and the Huawei P30 Pro run on the Kirin 980 chip. They are also both supported by 8GB of RAM.

Storage options differ between the two, with the Honor 20 Pro offering 256GB only, while the Huawei P30 Pro is available in 128GB and 512GB options. None of the models offer microSD for storage expansion.

In terms of battery, the Honor 20 has a 4000mAh capacity inside, while the Huawei P30 Pro has a 4200mAh capacity. Both offer fast charging, with the Honor featuring the company's 22.5W SuperCharge and the Huawei featuring 40W SuperCharge.

The P30 Pro offers wireless charging too, as well as reverse wireless charging, neither of which the Honor 20 Pro has.

Both devices have Android 9 at their core, but the P30 Pro offers Huawei's EMUI over the top and the Honor 20 Pro offers Honor's Magic UI over the top. Google is having to change the way it deals with Honor's parent company, Huawei, though so read our separate feature to find out how that might affect the Honor 20 Pro's and the Huawei's P30 Pro's software in future.

Price

  • Honor 20 Pro: €599
  • Huawei P30 Pro: From £899

UK pricing has yet to be announced for the Honor 20 Pro, but it looks like it's going to be much cheaper than the Huawei P30 Pro.

Huawei's P30 Pro starts at £899.

Conclusion

The Honor 20 Pro is quite a bit cheaper than the Huawei P30 Pro and it brings with it the same power, a good storage capacity, plenty of battery, a striking finish and a promising camera setup.

The Huawei P30 Pro meanwhile, is one of the best, if not the best, camera phone on the market currently, whilst also offering a huge battery with wireless charging, waterproofing and some fabulous finish options.

If money is no object, the Huawei P30 Pro is the device to buy, even if for its camera capabilities alone, but if you need to save a few pennies, the Honor 20 Pro offers a serious amount for its price.
