Panasonic will later today launch a new camcorder that records directly to SD Card. The new model called the 3CCD SD Video Camera SDR-S100 will offer 3.1 megapixel resolution, a 10x optical LEICA DICOMAR zoom lens and Optical Image Stabilizer.

The new model will be the flagship in a new line of SD Video Cameras that Pansonic hopes will give it the edge over its competitors.

The main difference to traditional digital camcorders is the move to record images in the MPEG2 rather than the standard MPEG4 format.

The S100 also features a wide, 2.8in LCD, making it easier to frame shots in the wide-screen 16:9 format. Of course, you can frame shots for viewing on a conventional 4:3 TV as well.

Panasonic has yet to set a launch date or price for the unit.

We will keep you posted.
