Nikon has announced a compact in its Coolpix range that improves on its predecessor by adding a vari-angle LCD screen for more control over the composition of shots.

The Nikon Coolpix S6600 shares many of the same specifications as the S6500 released in February, including built-in Wi-Fi, 12x optical zoom Nikkor lens and 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, but ups the stakes with the flip out screen.

In addition, Nikon has introduced gesture control to the camera. It allows you to shoot stills or video, or control the zoom using a swipe of a hand from a distance when the screen is in the self-portrait position.

It shoots video at Full HD 1080p and audio is recorded in stereo.

Special effects can be added to photos after being shot, with Nikon's Quick Effect mode, and there are 30 to choose from. There are also 18 scene modes, Easy Panorama, and blur and vibration reduction.

The Nikon Coolpix S6600 will be available in the UK from early September for £199.99. It will come in four colours: black, red, purple and white.
