Fujifilm has announced the launch of a new "A" Series compact camera, the A170, described as an easy-to-use, cost-conscious digi-cam.

The new compact offers a 10-megapixel sensor and can shoot at up to ISO 1600 with an "Anti-Blur Mode" option. Said to be "remarkably thin" at 21.9mm, the A170 gets a "high gloss-double coated veneer finish".

Features include "Panorama Mode" that captures and combines up to three consecutive shots making for one large panoramic shot, and "Scene Recognition AUTO", which claims to detect a scene without needing to pre-select the mode on the camera.

Once the scene in the frame has been detected, the camera will optimise the settings for "Portrait", "Landscape", "Macro", "Backlit Portrait", "Night" and "Night Portrait". The "Portrait" mode works in conjunction with face detection technology.

Operating on two AA batteries and boasting "exceptional low power consumption", the A170 will be available from August 2009 with that "cost-conscious" pricing due to be announced nearer to the date of the launch.
